This writing is not a biography, but rather one of a series of recollections of times when God did a work of grace in the life of a particular woman. She is not a woman who had any extraordinary talents or had any special abilities to make her stand out. She was neither pretty nor ugly; and, not extraordinarily smart, but of good intelligence. In other words she personifies most women. However, what does make her recollections unique is that this woman knew God through saving faith in the work of Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for her sins and achieved victory over death by rising from the dead.
I KNOW A WOMAN WHO……taught home bible studies to women. She didn’t teach from pre-published lessons, but rather developed studies directly from the Bible. The women she taught apparently liked her teaching so other classes developed. Eventually she had a class develop in a neighboring city 20 miles away.
One day, while traveling to the class in the neighboring city she had a flat tire. She liked to avoid the interstate route preferring to travel the old highways. Thus this highway, being less traveled, was somewhat isolated. Now she knew the principle of tire changing, but had never had to do it herself. (A husband and two teenage sons were always available for things like that.) Therefore, being alone she figured she would be put to the test of changing the tire herself. That is not to say, she had not sent up a prayer asking for help, which we had. So she opened the trunk and removed the spare tire.
A very old truck with homemade wooden sideboards pulled up. As a woman, alone, on an isolated road, she was cognizant of a possible dangerous situation. However, she was relieved when an older black man in overalls got out of his truck. He quickly assessed the situation and offered to help. Naturally, she agreed.
While he was working she began to wonder how to let him know she was a Christian and how to find out his spiritual state.
The following conversation ensued:
WOMAN: “You should know that you are an answer to my prayer.”
His answer left me speechless.
MAN: “I am glad He thought me worthy enough to help.”
I KNOW A WOMAN WHO…..on an isolated road met the most humble man she had ever met before or since.
