I KNOW A WOMAN WHO….
This writing is not a biography, but rather one of a series of recollections of times when God did a work of grace in the life of a particular woman. She is not a woman who had any extraordinary talents or had any special abilities to make her stand out. She was neither pretty or ugly; and, not extraordinarily smart, but of good intelligence. In other words she personifies most women. However, what does make her recollections unique is that this woman knew God through saving faith in the work of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for her sins and achieved victory over death by rising from the dead.
I KNOW A WOMAN WHO….struggled to understand what good could come about from the recent happenings to her family. She felt she had been tested by her willingness to say “Thy will be done,” during the happenings such as listed below:
1. Her husband had been injured in a one vehicle car accident resulting in a broken hip.
2. They had gone through several weeks of his staying off his broken hip/leg giving it time to heal.
3. They had spent years with his bone on bone pain to the extent that he literally had to crawl when he got out of bed at night to go to the restroom. The waiting happened because the orthopedic surgeon wasn’t willing to do a hip replacement. (Years ago hip replacements were a new thing and they, orthopedic surgeons, believed they wouldn’t last so they waited as long as they could before doing the surgery)
Finally, he got the surgery and it was a success. He could walk without that horrible pain. He was weak after surgery, but that was to be expected. Life was good again. Then, about a week after surgery, he went outside on a warm sunny day to watch their son pour a concrete pad. He was sitting in a chair and fainted and fell out of the chair. The fall dislocated his new, replaced hip. Of course he was taken by ambulance to the hospital and the orthopedic surgeon got his hip back in place.
As a consequence she was told that her husband could not put a foot to the floor for three weeks — he would have to stay in bed the whole time. She was devastated. There was no way she could imagine how this could be managed. She had a job with a corporation that owned nursing homes and she had already taken off a considerable amount of time due to the surgery. How could she take care of bathing and feeding and ministering to her husband?
She came home from the hospital and started talking to God about the situation. To be honest she was very angry with God. She told Him how faithful they had been up to then. She slammed and kicked a few doors. She yelled and screamed at God. No one else was home so she felt free to let all her frustrations and hurts out. After a while, her energy spent, she gave up and said, “OK God” and went to bed. The next morning she went to the hospital and her husband shared he too had talked to God and then accepted his situation.
Her story would not be complete without sharing what God did for her and her husband.
1. Obtained a hospital bed from the company she worked for.
2. Able to wake up extra early with plenty of energy to bathe, feed and take
Care of her husband’s needs.
3. Put a telephone on a table next to his bed for him to communicate with. (Cell phones did not exist at that time.)
4. Able to run home on her lunch hour and feed him lunch and take care of any of his needs.
5. God gave her husband the ability to be a GOOD patient.
6. What she thought couldn’t be done, was done with ease.
Romans 8:28 says God causes all things to work together for good to those who love the Lord, and that is exactly what He did.
a. Because her husband had access to a phone he contacted the bank and arranged a loan to remodel their home.
b. Because her husband was home he supervised the workers.
c. Because her home was remodeled she was able to start home bible studies.
I KNOW A WOMAN WHO…knows God really does love her.
